Places to Visit in Almora

ALhito is a Kumaoni-themed multicuisine restaurant one kilometre away from  Kasar Devi temple in Almora, Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region. Alhito is a word derived from Kumaon, which means “come let’s go” in English. However, ALhito’s intended meaning as a cafe is more in keeping with “Aadhyatm”, meaning “Spirituality” in English. It’s the idea of a place where one can choose to be alone in solitude without interacting with others.

Jageshwar Dham

Jageshwar, situated at an elevation of 1870 metres above sea level, is just a 37 km drive away from Almora. It has a dense Deodar forest with a stream flowing in its backyard. Jageshwar Dham is a temple present on the banks of Jata Ganga, with the main Shiva temple covered by 124 small ancient temples of various Gods. Jageshwar, according to the Skandha Purana, is the place where Shiva’s worship was initiated, and the 8th Shiva Jyotirlinga originates here.

Kasar Devi Temple

The village of Kasar Devi is located near Almora, Uttarakhand. It is famous for the Kasar Devi temple, a shrine dedicated to Kasar Devi and named after her. Built in the second century CE, the temple is a treasure of ancient history. Kasar Devi was visited by Swami Vivekananda in the 1890s and several western seekers, Sunyata Baba Alfred Sorensen and Lama Anagarika Govinda.

Khattarmal, a remote village in Kumaon Region, is located 12 km from the district centre of Almora. Surya Mandir (Sun Temple), also known as Badaditya Temple, is a sacred place at 2,116 meters above sea level and is located 19 kilometres from Almora. Temple doors and panels once featured elaborate designs carved on them, making it the second most beautiful temple in India after the Konark Sun Temple.

Sattal Christian Ashram, since 1930, has been serving as a go-to place for a large number of Christian Studies founded by Stanley Jones, Ethel Turner and Yonus Sinha. May-June and September-October are the most preferable time to visit here due to the celebrations attended by followers worldwide without discrimination based on creed, religion, caste, or other divides.

Binsar Wild Life Sanctuary

Binsar, named after the Bineshwar Mahadev temple, was previously the summer capital of Chand Dynasty Rulers from the 7th to 18th century AD. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the tiny hill town, serving as a habitat for rare animals, birds, and plants. Due to its thick foliage, the place is undoubtedly one of the best spots for hiking, camping, and nature walks. March to June and October to December are the best time to enjoy the beauty of Binsar.

The Binsar Zero Point is an ideal escape from the repetitive city life. Located at the top of Binsar Zero Point, the snow covered mountain ranges of Panchchuli, Shivling, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Nanda Devi are visible in all their beauty. Despite being a short trek, it will be an ideal introduction to mountain-climbing at high altitudes.

Gherad Golu Devata Mandir

Gherad Golu Devata Mandir is claimed to be one of the most famous among the temples located in Kumaon. It is located just 2 km from Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary’s main gate and approximately 11 km from Almora. Lord Golu Devta is called the ‘Lord of Justice’, who is considered the incarnation of Gaur Bhairav. The temple premises are ornamented with thousands of bells donated by devotees after the Golu Devta fulfils their wishes.
